Below are detailed, step-by-step instructions for granting someone a user role with manager-like access in WordPress.
Note that WordPress does not have a default “Manager” role out of the box.
Instead, you can assign a role that closely matches managerial responsibilities: as Editor (for content management) or Shop Manager (if you have WooCommerce for e-commerce management). If you need a fully customized “Manager” role, you’ll need a role-management plugin, which is also outlined below.

Prerequisites:
- You must have an Administrator account on the WordPress site.
- You should know the email address and desired username of the person you want to grant access.
Giving Manager-like Access with Default Roles
1. Log In to Your WordPress Dashboard:
Go to https://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin (replace yourwebsite.com with your actual domain).

Enter your Administrator username and password.
2. Navigate to the Users Section:
In the left-hand sidebar, click on “Users.”

Add a New User:

Click on “Add New” near the top of the page.
3. Fill Out the User Details:

Username: Enter a unique username for the new user.
Email: Enter their email address (this is where their login info will be sent).
First Name/Last Name (Optional): You can add this info if you wish.
Website (Optional): You can also leave this blank.
4. Assign a Role:
- From the “Role” dropdown menu, select a role that closely matches the managerial needs:
- Editor: Can manage all posts, pages, and content, including those published by other users.Shop Manager (WooCommerce-specific): Can manage the store’s products, orders, and customer details but doesn’t have full site admin access.
5. Send User Notification (Optional):
Check the box that says “Send the new user an email about their account.” This will send the login details to the new user’s email address.
6. Click “Add New User”:
After clicking this, the new user will appear in the Users list and will have the assigned role.
That’s it! The new user now has the permissions associated with the chosen role.
Creating a Custom Manager Role Using a Plugin (Optional)
If you need a more granular “Manager” role with specific capabilities not covered by the default roles, you can create one using a plugin:
1. Install a Role Management Plugin:
Go to “Plugins” > “Add New” in the WordPress dashboard.
Search for “Members” (by MemberPress) or “User Role Editor.”
Click “Install Now” and then “Activate.”
2. Create or Modify a Role:
After activation, go to “Users” > “User Roles” or the plugin’s settings page.
Click “Add New Role” or select an existing role you want to modify.
3. Name the Role “Manager”:
Give the new role a clear name, like “Manager.”
4. Assign Capabilities:
Check the boxes for the capabilities you want this user to have. For example:
Edit and publish posts/pages created by others.
Manage categories, tags, and possibly user comments.
Manage product listings and orders (if using WooCommerce).
5. Save Your Changes:
Click “Add Role” or “Update” to save your new or modified role.
6. Assign the New “Manager” Role:
Go to “Users” > “Add New” or edit an existing user.
Under the “Role” dropdown, select “Manager” (the new custom role).
Click “Update” or “Add New User.”
Your new “Manager” role is now active and can be assigned to any user, providing exactly the level of access and control you deem appropriate.
